Step-by-step advice on pathways, clubs, competitions and coaching for getting into girls cricket and women’s cricket in Chhattisgarh.
Girls cricket in Chhattisgarh is only slowly developing. The state team is still young, but full of enthusiasm for the sport.
Cricket in the state is run by the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh (CSCS).
If you are from Chhattisgarh and want to know how to get into cricket and join the women’s state team, here is how to go about it.
Where to start
If you have loved playing gully cricket so far, and you want to go one step further, start by playing sports in school. Even if it isn’t cricket, it will still help you develop motor skills and fitness and team spirit, which will all be useful.
Once you’re sure you want to pursue cricket, either join a private academy or reach out to your local district association to ask when they will have some coaching or camps available.
Of all the cricket districts in Chhattisgarh, Raipur, Bilaspur and Durg have a good number of girls coming through. Contact details of all the district associations are available on the CSCS website.
To play BCCI tournaments, you will have to register with CSCS or the districts.
How to get selected to the Chhattisgarh women’s team
Trials → Probables → State team
Selection for all age groups is directly via trials. These trials take place at the state level, but some districts might also hold unofficial trials to send their best players to the state level.
How this works is as follows:
- The association invites girls to attend trials on a particular day(s) with their documents. Keep an eye out on the website or in newspapers for the dates and venue, or ask your coach/sports teacher about it.
- Selectors watch the players perform on the day, ‘probables’ are shortlisted.
- The probables have a camp, and from this group, the final state team is selected.
The main CSCS centre is the Saheed Veer Narayan Singh stadium in Naya Raipur. But a lot of the day-to-day coaching will happen at the district level grounds.
Some venues are: Raipur District Association Ground, Rajahara ground, Ravishankar Shukla Stadium in Civil Lines in Durg, MG Stadium in Ambikapur, Gharghora cricket ground in Raigarh, NTPC Ground in Korba, Digvijay Stadium in Rajnandangaon, Raja Raghuraj Singh stadium in Bilaspur and Sector 10 ground in Bhilai.
The most successful private academies for women are in Bilaspur and Raipur.
