How to join girls cricket in Tripura

Step-by-step advice on pathways, clubs, competitions and coaching for getting into girls cricket and women’s cricket in Tripura.

Women’s cricket or girls cricket in Tripura is a developing sport. Work is still being done to implement the infrastructure, systems and processes needed to enable the team to improve.

Here’s a step-by-step look at how girls join cricket in Tripura:

Where to start

Start by joining a coaching camp or one of the Under-16 camps organised by the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA).

How to get selected for the Tripura women’s team

Tripura has Under-19, Under-23 and senior women’s cricket teams, with some limited Under-16 programme.

Selection to the state teams is mostly by open trials, but there is also an inter-club and an inter-district tournament conducted by the TCA and performances there do catch the eye of selectors.

The Sadar Women’s Tournament is a 50-over inter-club competition played by clubs from Agartala. In 2019-20, which is the most recent time the event happened, the participants were: Magnet Club, Cricket Anuragi, AD Nagar Play Centre, Champamura Cricket Coaching Centre, Agartala Coaching Centre and Tripura Jute Mill Play Centre.

The state inter-district tournament is a 45 or 50-over tournament. In 2018-19, the districts taking part were:

  • Sadar
  • Bishalgarh
  • Udaipur
  • Khowai
  • Dharmanagar
  • Teliamura
  • Mohanpur
  • Santirbazar

These tournaments were not held during the pandemic.

In 2021, a combination of open trials and a T20 Challenger Trophy was done.

First, three-day open trials were called. Based on performances in those trials, the players were divided into four teams of 13 each and the T20 Challenger Trophy was held. The tournament was a double round robin where each team played the other twice, and it finished with a final.

In non-pandemic times, based on these trials and tournaments, a list of probables is prepared. These players are called for a camp, at the end of which the state team is selected.

Agartala is the centre for women’s cricket in the state.

TCA also holds conditioning and skill development camps depending on the schedule.
