How to join girls cricket in Mizoram

Step-by-step advice on pathways, clubs, competitions and coaching for getting into girls cricket and women’s cricket in Mizoram.

Mizoram is a sports rich state, with women featuring in hockey, athletics, mountaineering and football. But not necessarily cricket.

For the past three decades, there has been a passionate group of people working to spread the game of cricket in the region, but it was only in 2017-18 that Mizoram got BCCI recognition and started taking part in the national tournaments.

Infrastructure and knowledge of cricket is very new in Mizoram, but like in the rest of the North-east, it is growing.

Here are some tips for a girl in Mizoram trying to get into cricket.

Where to start

There aren’t too many private cricket academies. So, in your pre-teens pursue another sport to work on fitness and strength, while also going for the camps held by the Cricket Association of Mizoram (CAM), which runs the sport in the state.

These camps are held around summer time, often at the Suaka Cricket Ground.

A small number of clubs have also started taking in female players. We’ll keep you posted about the details!

Selection to the Mizoram state women’s team

Mizoram has Under-19, Under-23 and senior age-group teams.

The process of selection is straightforward: Open trials → Probables camp → State team

  • CAM invites girls who are interested to play cricket for ‘open trials’ on a particular day before the start of the season (around May-June). Keep an eye on the newspaper or on the CAM Facebook or Instagram page for details on the venue and requirements.
  • You may need to submit your basic details and register before going for the trial. Then attend the trial and show off your skills to the selectors.
  • The best players from the trial are named as state ‘probables’. They then attend a state camp.
  • Based on performances at the camp, players are named for the three state squads.

CAM plans to introduce a Challenger Trophy, which will involve 3-4 teams playing each other in T20s, as well as a women’s indoor cricket competition. In the future, performances in these tournaments might count towards selection.

Facilities for cricket, especially for women, are still only developing. A lot of the training for the state teams happens outside Mizoram. In the state, the Suaka Memorial Cricket Ground at Sihhmui is the main centre.
